The Macrobiotic Diet
If you’re fed up with quick weight loss fad diets, the macrobiotic way of life could be for you. Created in Japan by George Ohsawa, it is low fat, high fibre and big on brown rice, whole grains, lentils and vegetables. Dairy, meat and white bread are a no-no, while fish and soya are the macrobiotic alternatives. The key is to eat natural, unprocessed foods, avoiding additives and eating fruit and vegetables which are in season. When it comes to cooking, steaming or eating the food raw rather than boiling or frying is encouraged. By cutting out unhealthy, processed foods you should lose weight, have more energy and look healthier. Yo sushi - here we come.
What to do:
Every meal: 50% of your daily intake should be whole grains such as brown rice, 30% of each meal should be vegetables, 10-20% soya beans such as tofu.
Every day: 1-2 bowls of miso soup.
Several times a week: fish, local fruit, dessert.
In moderation: seeds and nuts.
Avoid: processed sugar such as sweets, chocolate and biscuits.
Good idea?
Macrobiotic is a lifestyle rather than a strict diet, so you can adapt the principles to suit you. If you still need a coffee to get you going, you can have it in moderation.
Bad Idea?
It can be difficult to make sure you get all the nutrients you need from a low protein, almost vegetarian diet, so make sure you take a good multi-vitamin. Plus - it is not always easy to constantly buy fresh food that’s in season if you lead a busy lifestyle (and don’t have servants like Madonna) or are strapped for cash. This therefore truly is a weight loss programme for Celebrities.
This safe weight lose method has been tried by Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.
